Through discussions of readings, this group cultivates dialogues that interrogate past and present links between energy governance, capitalist development, and political power (including the birth of democratic nation-states, the rise and fall of empires, and global governance). The group is anchored in a historical approach to these questions, but it aims to foster interdisciplinary exchanges. To that end, we welcome graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, early-career scholars, and professors who work across historical sub-disciplines, the social sciences, law, and policy. We will read a balance of classic primary texts as well as new pathbreaking works of scholarship. The reading list will evolve collaboratively, according to members' interests.
The reading workshop is organised by Liane Hewitt and sponsored by the Centre for History and Economics, Paris.
